An arrest has been made in the deadly stabbing of Cash App inventor Bob Lee on April 4, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a press conference on Thursday. A Bay Area IT entrepreneur named Nima Momeni has been identified as the suspect.
In addition, authorities have stated that Momeni knew the victim, however, they have declined to elaborate on a possible motivation. They added that the probe was still active.
On Friday, Momeni will be arraigned, and the prosecution has already stated that they would be presenting a motion to keep him in jail without bail.
On Thursday morning, police in the San Francisco suburb of Emeryville made the arrest. Momeni, 38, was put into custody on murder charges at 9:19 a.m., according to jail records.
Mission Local, a San Francisco-based news outlet, was the first to break the story of the arrest. At the news conference, Jenkins lashed out at analysts and celebrities who had used the tragedy to portray San Francisco as a dangerous place to live.
At 2:35 a.m., San Francisco police officers discovered Lee, 43, in a remote area of the city with stab wounds. According to CNBC reports at the time, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but eventually passed away.
Lee’s position at MobileCoin was that of chief product officer. Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recruited him away from Twitter to serve as CTO of financial technology firm Square (now known as Block ). Lee then developed the money transfer app Cash App.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he also invested in other technology companies, such as the social audio app Clubhouse, founded by Elon Musk.
Former colleagues have spoken highly of Lee, with MobileCoin CEO Joshua Goldbard calling him a “brilliant” visionary with a “kaleidoscopic” intellect in a Twitter thread.
