At Least 8 Individuals Were Shot At A Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration In Florida, According To The Sheriff’s Office: The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said that eight persons were shot at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day rally in Fort Pierce, Florida.
The commotion that ensued after the gunfire left one person in serious condition and four others injured, citing the sheriff’s office.
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Hester claimed shots were fired after the “MLK Car Show and Family Fun Day” in Ilous Ellis Park due to a “disagreement of some type.” According to Hester, eight people were shot and sent to the hospital. There were seven patients, all but one of whom were not in serious condition, but no quick updates were given on their situations.
Hester stated that police were investigating several leads and tips from the public, but he did not specify whether or not someone was in custody or whether or not a suspect or suspects had been identified. According to Hester’s assessment, there was likely more than one gunman.
Hester said that eight adults were wounded in the incident, with a ninth victim, a kid, suffering non-gun-related injuries.
According to Hester, two sheriff’s deputies were on duty to keep the event safe, but neither of them saw the shooter(s). Hester claimed both deputies helped those who had been injured.
As Hester put it, “it is terrible and tragic that during a celebration for someone who represented peace and equality, a dispute results in the use of guns and violence to overcome that issue.”
