Father Mark Beard, a beloved pastor at St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite, Louisiana, was killed in a tragic automobile accident on Wednesday, August 2. Bishop Michael G. Duca announced his death on the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge’s Facebook page. Following this heartbreaking death, the Bishop asked for prayers for Father Mark, his family, friends, and parishioners who are mourning the loss of their beloved pastor.
A deadly car accident happened on Interstate 55, north of the state boundaries between Louisiana and Mississippi, at approximately 1.30 p.m., according to law enforcement reports. The accident tragically resulted in the death of a Catholic priest.
Preliminary accounts from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Father Mark was driving south on Interstate 55 when his vehicle went off the road, striking a median and then a culvert. Tragically, the car crashed in the accident, killing Father Mark Beard on the spot.
Father Mark, owned a home in Mississippi and frequently visited it. On the evening of August 2, a Rosary ceremony was held at St. Helena Catholic Church in honour of Father Mark.
Who was Father Mark Beard?
Father Mark Beard was born in the Louisiana city of Baton Rouge. He finished high school at Baton Rouge’s Catholic High School and went on to college at Louisiana State University (LSU).
Mark felt called to become a priest while on vacation, according to his pals. They agreed that Father Mark’s philanthropic work as a pastor in Amite was exceptional, and he was well-known for his genuine concern for the souls of others. His friends praised him, calling him an amazing person with a strong sense of compassion.
In a 2010 interview with Medjugorje Miracles, Father Mark said that a visit to Medjugorje, a town in Herzegovina and Bosnia, had a profound impact on his life. His conversion to Catholicism began as an “angry sceptic” intent on disproving religious visionaries, but the encounter led to his profound conversion.

Mark was ordained in 2009 and quickly rose to prominence as a religious leader in Amite. He presided over Governor John Bel Edwards’ first and second inaugurations. Tragically, he died three days after his final sermon on Sunday, July 30th.
