Sibley was murdered in Brooklyn on the evening of July 29. He and his friends had been dancing at a service station. They are seen dancing and smiling as they fill up their petrol tanks. In the video, a mob can be heard yelling homophobic slurs at the dancers.
The defendant and his friends were overheard by a confidential witness yelling homophobic slurs at a group of about five guys and telling them to “stop dancing here, we are Muslim, get that get s— out of here.” Sibley was stabbed during a fight a few minutes later. On the morning of Tuesday, August 8, 2023, mourners gathered at The Met on North Broad Street for the funeral service. The event’s program stated that “The Grand Finale of O’Shae Leon ‘Sage’ Sibley” was the evening’s main attraction.

Beyoncé, a global pop icon, has drawn attention to the attack by paying respect to Sibley on her website. Philadelphia proclaimed in his honour, and many residents attended his funeral and offered their concerns.
A speech was given at Sibley’s burial condemning such bigotry. Otis Pea, a close friend of Sibley’s from their time in New York, and Karen Still Pendergrass, Sibley’s first dance instructor, addressed the crowd.
Sibley’s relatives, dressed in blue and white, filled the first few seats of the auditorium. Some of them were even wearing t-shirts bearing Sibley’s likeness and name. Philadanco! Performed in honour of the 28-year-old dancer.

Sibley honed his dance chops with the group before moving to New York. Philadanco! set up a GoFundMe to help his family out. The company also endowed a scholarship in his name.
Representatives from the New York district attorney’s office were present in Philadelphia. They told Action News that they came to support Sibley’s family but declined to go further.
On Facebook, one user wrote, “O’Shae was a cherished and devoted Ailey Extension student. He had incredible energy in the studio and was loved by instructors and classmates.”
