Gavin Escobar, a former tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, passed away after being involved in a rock-climbing accident in California.
On Wednesday, authorities in California announced on Twitter that a former National Football League player who is now a firefighter was one of two climbers found by first responders at Tahquitz Rock in Idyllwild in the San Bernardino National Forest. He is 31 years old.
“Rescuers made access to the site of the victims,” the Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire Department added in a follow-up tweet that stated Escobar and 33-year-old Chelsea Walsh had both “perished at the scene.” The statement also noted that “Rescuers made access to the location of the victims.”
From 2013 through 2018, Escobar was a member of the National Football League (NFL). He spent four of those years with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was picked in the second round at position 47, and one year with the Baltimore Ravens.
According to the high school that he attended prior to college, he participated in athletics at San Diego State University, where he was recognised as a scholar-athlete and named to the first team of all-Mountain West Conference players on two separate occasions.
On Thursday night, previous teams of Escobar’s, including the Cowboys and the Aztecs, paid tribute to him on various social media platforms.
The Cowboys posted the phrase “Forever in our hearts” beside a picture of Escobar playing for the team while wearing jersey number 89. San Diego State Football continued by saying, “Gavin, we adore you.”
Following his retirement from professional football in February of this year, Escobar became a member of the Long Beach Fire Department, according to the agency, which confirmed his passing on Facebook.

“After being hired on the 5th of February, 2022, Firefighter Escobar was placed on the B-shift at Fire Station 3. Before becoming a firefighter in Long Beach, Gavin Escobar was a professional football player in the National Football League (NFL), where he spent the majority of his career with the Dallas Cowboys.”
According to NBC 7 San Diego, Gavin Escobar is survived by his wife, Sarah, and their two little kids, Josey and Charlotte.
