Some 500 Americans Russia has barred from entering the nation include former US President Barack Obama, late-night star Stephen Colbert, and CNN’s Erin Burnett.

On Friday (19 May), Russia announced it was banning “500 Americans,” many prominent figures of US executive power, from entering the country in response to the regular anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Joe Biden administration from Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Obama, Jon Huntsman, a former US ambassador, many US senators, and Charles Q. Brown Jr., who would likely succeed Obama as chairman of the joint chiefs, are all on the list.

According to CNN, American late-night TV hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Colbert, and Seth Meyers are also on the long list of names. The statement also said:

“The attached ‘list-500’ also includes those in government and law enforcement agencies who are directly involved in the persecution of dissidents in the wake of the so-called Storming the Capitol.”

On January 6, 2021, scores of former US President Donald Trump supporters sought to stop Biden’s certification as president and attcked the US Capitol. A few months later, Russian President Vladimir Putin seemed to dispute the detention of the protesters, claiming that the crowd had come to Congress “with political demands,” according to Reuters.

The list, updated on Friday (19 May), includes CNN anchor Erin Burnett and senior global affairs analyst Bianna Golodryga, chief international security correspondent Nick Paton Walsh of CNN, and contributor Timothy Naftali of CNN.

According to News Express, Paton Walsh was one of the “500 Americans,” comprising British citizens. The ministry justified the bans in a statement on its website that read:

“It is high time for Washington to learn that not a single hostile attck against Russia will go without a strong reaction.”

The charges against each individual were not specified, and it was unclear what the consequences would entail beyond an exclusion from the county.

In addition, the ministry said it is continuing to deny a US embassy request for consular access to American journalist Evan Gershkovich “due to the failure to issue visas to Russian journalists from the Lavrov pool,” in an apparent reference to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s trip to the United States in April.
