The upcoming Netflix film Pain Hustlers, based on an actual event, is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats for the same reason.

Here’s the scoop on her new movie!

What Is Pain Hustlers About?

What Is Pain Hustlers About

According to early rumors, Adam McKay’s Pain Hustlers will take place in the same cutthroat and often an amoral world of pharmaceuticals as his film The Big Short, which took on Wall Street and exposed the wrongdoings of the so-called “great” financial brains. To provide for herself and her kid, high school dropout Liza Drake takes work at a struggling pharmaceutical startup in Central Florida.

As a result of Liza’s talents and charisma, she quickly rises through the ranks of the company and helps to bring it increased visibility, influence, and stability. But things aren’t what they appear, and soon Liza is in the middle of a criminal plot that threatens not only her career but the lives of others as well.

Pain Hustlers was inspired by an interactive story of the same name published in the New York Times Magazine by Evan Hughes in 2018.

The pharmaceutical company Insys was the subject of the piece because it reaped financial benefits from the opioid crisis thanks to a program that offered doctors generous “speaking fees” in exchange for prescribing Subsys, a fentanyl-based pain medicine.

Insys recruited young, attractive women (often in their twenties or thirties) with little to no sales experience, and they targeted doctors in financial straits. While several salespeople made six-figure salaries, Insys filed for bankruptcy in 2019.
