Yet Ralph Macchio has only added fuel to the fire. As quoted in an article by Us Magazine: “The show hasn’t been picked up yet. Unfortunately, I have to say that because it is the truth. Nonetheless, we’re optimistic that we’ll be able to keep making episodes of the program and allowing it to change and land at the appropriate times.” Later, he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he believes something is going to happen “very soon.”
Thus, it appears to be a near certainty. Nonetheless, the simultaneous premieres of the fourth season in December 2021 and the fifth season in September 2022 are highly unlikely to be replicated. The two seasons were shot back-to-back, and as Jon Hurwitz put it, “nothing” has been shot thus far.
Production start times from previous movies might give us an idea of when the picture will be released. Episodes from Seasons 4 and 5 finally made it to television about 11 or 12 months after production had begun. If it happens again, production on Season 6 would begin a year after Season 5 wrapped. But depending on the story’s development, the future of characters like Cho-zen’s Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan’s Mike Barnes remains uncertain.
After his dramatic jail release in the season five finale, Kreese actor Martin Kove would play much more strongly in a prospective Cobra Kai season 6. Season 5 of Cobra Kai concluded with the apparent dissolution of Cobra Kai, the arrest of Terry Silver for his multiple misdeeds, and the escape of Kreese from prison. Johnny has found peace with his new family, and he is helping Miguel and Robby do the same.
The situation appears to be resolved at this time. However, the Sekai Takai competition is still to come. Season two is intended to be the “Super Bowl of karate” for the genre, according to the show’s makers.
Schlossberg has stated that the upcoming competition will be the largest in the series, but that additional information is still forthcoming. “The outcome of that remains to be seen. Let’s just say we’ve got a lot of plans for these guys.”
The show’s two remaining adversaries, Kreese and sensei Kim Da-Eun, who had a major stake in Cobra Kai, could be leading the charge in a worldwide karate tournament.
Are they a team that could take on Sekai Takai? It’s something to think about, but don’t count on Kenny or Tory to join them. Since the two have abandoned Cobra Kai, new players (and potential adversaries) will need to step up to challenge Miyagi-top do’s, students.
Also, Johnny is adjusting to life as a parent for the second time. One of our favorite fan theories, that Terry Silver is on his deathbed, is given added weight by a possible time jump (albeit not on the scale of House of the Dragon). If the sensei is truly leaving this mortal karate coil, Silver must have one last move under his sleeve to help him go out in style. Keep an eye out.
