The 2019 “live-action” version of Disney’s animated classic The Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King, follows in the footsteps of other recent Disney remakes by replacing bright hand-drawn animation with photorealistic CG animation.
Despite being a shot-for-shot remake, which some critics said lacked the charm and personality of the original Lion King, the film still earned over $1.6 billion worldwide, surpassing the original’s total.

As announced at the Disney and Pixar panel at the 2022 D23 Expo, Mufasa: The Lion King is scheduled for a worldwide release in the year 2024. Who Will Be In Charge of Directing Mufasa: The Lion King?
The first “live-action” Lion King film was directed by Jon Favreau, but he has opted out of helming this prequel, likely to concentrate on his Star Wars series The Mandalorian. Instead, Mufasa: The Lion King will be directed by Barry Jenkins, who won an Oscar for both Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk.
Jenkins won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, but he isn’t getting credit for writing the new film; instead, he’ll be directing a film based on a script written by Jeff Nathanson, who also wrote the 2019 Lion King. However, Jenkins is a well-respected, established director, so audiences will look to him to bring his creative sensibilities to this lavish Disney production. About Whom And What Does Mufasa: The Lion King, Revolve?
The story of Mufasa: The Lion King is still mostly unknown. It was initially announced in 2020 as a sequel that, like The Godfather, Part II, will alternate between the past and the present.
Publications have lately labeled this film as a prequel, however, the D23 teaser shows Rafiki explaining Mufasa’s history to Timon and Pumbaa in the present day, so perhaps the film will alternate between the two time periods. After all, in The Lion King 1 1/2, Timon and Pumbaa tell the story of how they met in a hilarious fashion.
The original Lion King tie-in novel, The Lion King: A Tale of Two Brothers, depicts a younger Mufasa and Scar and may serve as inspiration for Mufasa: The Lion King.
Since Kelvin Harrison Jr. was initially announced to voice a character named Taka, and the novel states that Mufasa’s younger brother was named Taka before he became Scar, it appears that the film is already taking one element from this novel. Cast For Mufasa: The Lion King?
All the performers and characters who will be in Mufasa: The Lion King are listed below. It’s important to remember that the movie has a long way to go until it’s released, so the following cast list may not be exhaustive.
Prince Mufasa of the African Pride Lands is portrayed by Aaron Pierre. Mufasa is the king of the Pride Lands and the doting father of future king Simba in both 1994 original and the 2019 remake of “The Lion King.” Both Mufasas was voiced by James Earl Jones, and we can only hope that Pierre can emulate Jones’s booming, commanding delivery.
After working with Jenkins on the Prime Video drama The Underground Railroad, in which he played a recurring part, the British actor Pierre is reuniting with him. The Superman spinoff Krypton and the M. Night Shyamalan picture Old both included cameos from Pierre. His part in the upcoming MCU movie Blade has not been disclosed, but he will be in it.
Mufasa’s scheming younger brother, Taka (also known as Scar), is voiced by Kelvin Harrison Jr. Scar plots to overthrow Mufasa and Simba in both versions of “The Lion King.” Early in his career, Harrison appeared in a number of critically regarded independent films like It Comes At Night, Luce, and Waves.

He later went on to participate in more mainstream films like The Trial of the Chicago 7, Cyrano, and Elvis. That being said, it’s possible that this is his most ambitious work to date.
John Kani lends his voice to Rafiki, the intelligent and somewhat crazy baboon who is Mufasa’s trusted buddy. Rafiki is said to be featured in the D23 teaser for Mufasa: The Lion King explaining Mufasa’s history. Rafiki’s original voice work by Kani can be heard in the 2019 version of The Lion King, to which this film serves as a precursor.
The South African actor/playwright is especially well-known for his portrayal of T’Chaka in the Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther.
Timon, played by Billy Eichner, is a snarky yet kind meerkat who grows close to Simba. Timon hears Rafiki tell Mufasa’s story in the D23 trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King. You may recall that Eichner’s first time voicing Timon was in the 1994 animated film adaptation of The Lion King.
The NBC comedy series Parks and Recreation, in which he played Craig Middlebrooks, and the game show Billy on the Street both contributed to his fame. Eichner also co-wrote and acts in Bros, the first LGBTQ+ romantic comedy produced by a major studio.
The warthog Pumbaa, voiced by Seth Rogen, is Timon’s best buddy and grows close to Simba. He is more naive than Timon, but he is still sweet and caring. Pumbaa and Timon sit and listen to Rafiki tell the story of Mufasa’s birth in the D23 preview for Mufasa: The Lion King.
Rogen made his voice acting debut in the 1994 adaptation of The Lion King, like the rest of his co-stars, who all portrayed characters from the original film.
