The Princess Diaries, a film adaptation of Meg Cabot’s books, was released to the public in 2001. In 2004, the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement made its debut. The classic movie, starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, tells the story of Mia Thermopolis, a shy San Francisco teenager who learns she is the princess and heir apparent of the tiny European principality of Genovia.
Mia and her mother now live in an apartment that was formerly a firehouse, where the queen, Clarisse Rinaldi, comes to teach her all the royal protocol in preparation for the day she will take the kingdom.
Mia is proclaimed “Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia” (yeah, chills!) at the end of The Princess Diaries 2, replacing Clarisse as monarch. She successfully overturns the archaic royal marriage code and instead maintains her heart open to love, and a relationship with Lord Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine).

Who Will Star In The Princess Diaries 3?
The project is still in its infancy, hence there has been no announcement of a cast. That leaves us in the dark as to whether or not the original cast will return. However, we can safely assume that Julie Andrews will not be returning to her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, as she has stated that she has no plans to do so.
As she accepted her AFI Life Achievement Award, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think it would be too late to do it now.” It’s too late to turn back now, especially for me. Beautiful idea, but I doubt it’s feasible.
Last month in December, Julie Andrews provided an update in which she again expressed doubt that she would be included in the film.

“I am that much older, and Annie [Hathaway], the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.”
Anne Hathaway, on an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2019, said that a draught for a third film in the franchise existed, thus it’s possible that she may return to the franchise. She recently admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she was “pushing for it” and “would more than entertain it.”

When Can We Expect To See The Princess Diaries 3?
Release information for Princess Diaries 3 has been scarce since the film’s confirmation on November 15, 2022. It’s unclear how long we’ll have to wait for the film’s release because both the plot and the cast are being kept under wraps.

Anne Hathaway, who plays the lead, agrees. It’s probably really aggravating, she said People in January 2023, but “we feel the exact same” as the viewers. As the director of the film put it, “It’s a process that involves patience, and therefore everybody should consider themselves a member of the movie business now because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”
