Wahlberg Spent Millions On His Religious Drama “Father Stu”
Mark Wahlberg starred in and produced his religious drama, Father Stu, to be released in 2022. The film is based on the true tale of Stuart Long, a former amateur boxer who developed inclusion body myositis and eventually became a Catholic priest.
He also revealed to Insider that he largely helped to fund the project too, having spent “millions and millions” to get it made.
“I slipped the script to a couple of people that I thought maybe would get it, and they didn’t,” he told the Outlet.

Wahlberg said in the interview, “It’s a balance. I don’t wish to force my beliefs on anyone, but neither do I reject them. What you just did is even worse than the transgression I just mentioned.
“You know, it’s not popular in my industry, but I cannot deny my faith. It’s important for me to share that with people. But, I have friends from all walks of life and all different types of faiths and religions, so it’s important to respect and honor them as well.”
Last year, Wahlberg portrayed Stuart Long, a real-life boxer who converted to Catholicism, in the film Father Stu.
Following in the footsteps of Mel Gibson, who put $30 million (£23 million) into the Christian film The Passion of the Christ, the 51-year-old claimed to have spent “millions and millions” of his own money on the project.
Wahlberg said that he could not take credit for the movie’s success “because this is God choosing me to make the film”.
“He [God] knows finally I get to utilise all the talents and gifts that have been bestowed upon me for his greater good and to serve my part in his big picture. I mean, I prayed every day about getting this film made.”
The actor did say, though, that he had to change churches several times due to people constantly approaching him with movie ideas during services.
“I’m not at church looking to find material. I’m trying to find some peace and quiet to be able to worship,” he said.
