Princess Anne Early Life

Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was born on August 15, 1950, in London, England, during the reign of her maternal grandfather King George VI. Princess Anne was given the name Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise at birth. She was the only daughter of Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was their second child overall. Her mother, Princess Elizabeth, would go on to become Queen Elizabeth II a few years after she gave birth to her.

Charles, the future King of England, is Anne’s older brother. Catherine Peebles, Anne’s governess, was responsible for her care and education throughout her childhood. In later years, she received an education at Benenden School in Kent, from which she graduated in 1968 having earned two A-Levels and six GCE O-Levels.

During the 1970s, Anne rose to prominence as an equestrian competitor. At the beginning of the decade, she competed in the Rushall Horse Trials and won gold in the individual event at the European Eventing Championship held in Burghley. Both of these accomplishments took place in England.

In addition to this, Anne was a member of the British eventing team that competed internationally and won a silver medal in the team competition at the European Eventing Championship in 1975. Additionally, during that same year, she won the silver medal in the individual competition. After that, in 1976, Anne rode as a member of the British team at the Summer Olympics in Montreal. Unfortunately, she sustained a concussion in the middle of the course, which forced her to withdraw from the competition. After she retired from competitive riding, Anne held the position of president of the Fédération Equestre Internationale from 1986 until 1994.

In 1974, a man named Ian Ball made an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Anne. The incident occurred during that year. When she and her party were returning home from a charity event, Ball held them up at gunpoint and demanded money. Following an altercation in which a number of people were shot, a bystander named Ron Russell, who had formerly competed in boxing, struck Ball in the head and assisted Anne in escaping the area. The ball was eventually apprehended, charged with attempted murder and kidnapping, and sentenced to prison for his crimes.

Late in 1973, Anne wed equestrian and royal lieutenant Mark Phillips, whom she had met for the first time in 1968 at a party for horse enthusiasts. The couple had been together since 1968. Peter was the name given to the couple’s son, and Zara was the name given to their daughter.

In 1989, Anne and Phillips made public their decision to separate, and they ultimately divorced the following year in 1992. After the initial breakup, Anne began a relationship with Royal Navy commander Timothy Laurence, whom she eventually married in the latter half of 1992.
