Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was born on August 15, 1950, in London, England, during the reign of her maternal grandfather King George VI. Princess Anne was given the name Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise at birth. She was the only daughter of Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was their second child overall. In 1974, a man named Ian Ball made an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Anne. The incident occurred during that year. When she and her party were returning home from a charity event, Ball held them up at gunpoint and demanded money. Following an altercation in which a number of people were shot, a bystander named Ron Russell, who had formerly competed in boxing, struck Ball in the head and assisted Anne in escaping the area. The ball was eventually apprehended, charged with attempted murder and kidnapping, and sentenced to prison for his crimes.
