Marta Magdalena Abakanowicz (married name Kosmowska) was born into a family of noble landowners in the village of Falenty, close to Warsaw. Her mother, Helena Domaszewska, is of ancient Polish noble descent.
Her father, Konstanty Abakanowicz, was descended from a Lipka Tatar family that can be traced back to Abaqa Khan, a 13th-century Mongol warlord. After the October Revolution, her father’s family fled Russia to the newly re-established democratic Poland.
