The family of late actor Jansen Panettiere has spoken out about his unexpected passing.
Hayden Panettiere’s younger brother passed away abruptly on February 19. He was 28 years old.
According to reports, at around 5:30 p.m., law enforcement was dispatched to his New York residence.
There were no new developments to report at the time.
On Monday (27 February), one week after his passing, his family spoke out about his death in a statement to ABC News.
Jansen Panettiere Cause Of Death
Jansen Panettiere’s sister Hayden said the 28-year-old actor died last week from cardiomegaly, an enlarged heart, and difficulties with his aortic valve.
“Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications,” the family said in a statement to ABC News.
“We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support towards our family as we navigate this unthinkable loss, and ask that we be gifted our privacy during this time of mourning,” the family said. “We love you so much, Jansen, and you will be in our hearts forever.”

Nyack, New York, February 19th. Following in his sister Hayden’s footsteps, he was also an actress with guest starred on shows including Even Stevens, Blue’s Clues, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and The Walking Dead.
Panettiere made his acting debut on Disney Channel’s Even Stevens in 2002 with a young Shia LaBeouf. He was born on September 25, 1994, in Palisades, New York. Later, he voiced the recurring character Periwinkle on Blue’s Clues and had guest appearances on the sitcom Hope & Faith and the drama Third Watch in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
His voice can be heard in numerous films and television shows, such as Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and The X’s.
Panettiere’s sister, an artist, co-starred in the 2004 Disney Channel film Tiger Cruise, featuring Panettiere. He had a supporting role in How High 2 on MTV in 2019. As an actress, Hayden Panettiere is well-known for appearing in the Scream films, and the television shows Heroes and Nashville.
In the statement to ABC News, the late actor’s family, including his mother Lesley Vogel, father Skip Panettiere and sister Hayden, said, “Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit. His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”
What Is Cardiomegaly?
An enlarged heart, or cardiomegaly, is defined as “an increase in the size of the heart” by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
While not technically an illness in and of itself, it does indicate the presence of another issue that could impact cardiac function. Circulatory demands might temporarily rise, as in pregnancy, and other disorders can cause the heart muscle to thicken or the heart chambers to spread out (dilate), making the heart larger.
In most cases, there is no apparent cause for cardiomegaly. The first is dilatation, in which the heart’s walls thin, stretch, and weaken; the second is hypertrophy, in which the heart’s walls thicken, decreasing the heart’s efficiency.
Heart failure is a problem that affects over 750,000 Canadians at the moment, and various heart-damaging conditions can cause it. An additional 100,000 people per year are thought to be diagnosed with this fatal illness.

What Are The Symptoms Of Cardiomegaly?
Cardiomegaly can be fatal. However, some people may not have symptoms until the disease progresses. Some of the possible symptoms are:
- Problems breathing
- Pressure in the chest
- Sudden, severe chest pain (rapid, fluttering, or pounding heartbeat)
- Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) (irregular heartbeat)
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Inability to recover after physical exertion
- Swelling
Jansen And Hayden Panettiere’s Father Spoke To Son Shortly Before He Died
Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, the father of Jansen and Hayden, was taken aback by the sudden news of his son’s death.
An Orangetown police report obtained by PEOPLE states that Skip went to the scene after his kid was killed. According to the report, Skip said that he had spoken to the deceased on the phone the night before and that he sounded OK.
On Monday, PEOPLE reported that Jansen had passed away over the weekend in New York. He had just turned 28.
Benjamin Brown, a friend of Jansen’s, reportedly visited his flat in Nyack when Jansen didn’t show up for a business appointment. Brown arrived home to find Jansen “seated erect in a chair unresponsive” in the main room.
Even though Jansen wasn’t breathing and was ice cold, his friend continued CPR until paramedics came.
Jansen was found face down on the floor of his living room when emergency personnel arrived; they pronounced him dead shortly after. The report states that his body was taken to the Rockland County mortuary.
A source told TMZ that while the circumstances of Jansen’s death are unknown, no foul play is suspected. Additionally, “no clear symptoms of trauma were found,” per the report’s findings.
Hayden’s brother Michael joined her in the entertainment industry. During his career, he has been in several films and television shows, including Even Stevens, The Walking Dead, The Martial Arts Child, The X’s, The Perfect Game, and How High 2. Also, he co-starred in her Disney Channel Original Movie Tiger Cruise with the 33-year-old Nashville alum.
It was in the 2022 Christmas film Love and Love Not that he made his final screen appearance before his tragic passing. His IMDb website indicated that he was currently working on four separate projects.
Jansen was an aspiring actor who also expressed his appreciation for the visual arts on his popular Instagram feed. The blue heart emoji emerged next to what appeared to be a recent photo of his alleged girlfriend, Catherine Michie.
