Activision has initiated DMCA takedowns, causing several Call of Duty-themed maps to be removed from Fortnite Creative 2.0. With the release of Fortnite Creative 2.0, players are now able to express their individuality by creating their own maps and game variants.
Fortnite Creative is a sandbox metagame where players may create their maps via an Unreal Engine editor and then distribute those maps to other players via codes. Fortnite Creative 2.0, formerly known as the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, was published in February of this year after its initial release in 2018. Players were quick to show off their creativity with some of the best Fortnite Creative 2.0 maps, such as Kool Light69’s scary “Scary Doll,” Infinity. Studios’ “GemStone Tycoon,” and Atlas Creative’s recreation of the classic “Chapter 1” Fortnite Battle Royale level.
Popular fan-made maps that were remakes of classic Call of Duty locations have been removed from the site after Activision filed DMCA takedown notices. Jake Lucky, a popular YouTuber, tweeted about the takedowns after watching a video featuring gameplay from one of Mist Jawa’s maps. Both the Rust and Shipping maps from Call of Duty were re-created for the presentation. Epic has already cautioned players about the risks of violating its intellectual property standards in Fortnite Creative 2.0.

Mist Jawa released a statement on Twitter declaring they will stop making unauthorized remakes of maps and that all of their old maps had been removed. They also deleted all tweets and videos sent to YouTube that mentioned the maps. Some players have mentioned that identical recreations of locations from other IPs may be found in fan-made levels for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, such as the custom Zombies map that depicts Dunder Mifflin from The Office.

Fortnite Creative 2.0, Forge mode in the Halo series and the level editor in Far Cry 5 have all been instrumental in empowering players to craft their own unique gaming experiences and maintaining vibrant fan bases. Not only that but also allows players to use maps that Epic Games wouldn’t normally release, like the revamped version of the original Fortnite Chapter 1 map in Fortnite Creative 2.0.

Even though some of these inventions sit in unfortunate legal murky areas that can lead to takedowns, their popularity underscores the value of supporting these modes. Fortnite’s creative community has already shown a lot of promise in the short time that Fortnite Creative 2.0 has been available.
